Antispam Scanner
A clear and simple way to separate the spam from the letters.

Dear forum administrator,
Please move this topic as appropriate.
Thank you

PostPosted: Sun Sep 30, 2007 6:27 pm    Post subject: Troubleshooting Antispam Scanner won't connect Reply with quote

Symptoms:
On-line,
- Clicking the Synchronize button displays the process window with "connecting", but does not report proceeding any further. The displayed timer continues ticking along.
- Antispam Scanner has loaded and configures okay (test by adding preliminary words to the White and Black lists).

Diagnosis:
1. Port(s) may be blocked.
The ISP may be blocking the port(s) used by Antispam Scanner (probably Port 110), while
web surfing and file transfers ports are open (80, 21).
Or, an Administrator may have restricted the network.
A client e-mail manager can use Port 21 or 80 for receiving, and Port 143 (IMAP4) or Webmail for sending.

Some most-basic ISPs block ports 23, 25, 110, 119, 389.
Other basic ISPs block Port 23 and may restrict other ports.

Apparently, Antispam Scanner does not error trap inability to connect. (The conventional connection is Port 110, POP3 retrieve or query e-mail stored on a remote server).

Rx:
Ask your ISP. Test with another ISP. At least a couple free (basic) ISPs exist in the U.S. that allow most ports except 23, and several ISPs allow free trial (as long as the trial is explicitly ended before its expiration).

2. Also check that:
Internet connection is valid
- Remote web pages work okay.
- Webmail works okay.
- Local e-mail client program works okay.
- Firewall and antivirus (AV) monitoring programs are set to report if anything actionable is detected.
- AV and malware scans of system are up to date.

These are interpretations of observations, with respect to IANA Assignments, (last updated 2007-10-02), and software report of which ports in use.

3. Corrections are welccme.

What should be done if the synchronization process stalls before retrieving all the message titles?
How to prevent? How to recover without losing data?

-> Does Antispam Scanner (AS) ever stop because a malformed message is encountered?

Summary of actions done:
Synchronization successfully finished.
Later,
Clicked Synchronize button, AS downloaded about 90% of message titles, then stopped. (The inbox was quite flooded.)

The message that stopped the process was located by number, and viewed using webmail. A mailer-daemon had added reports of errors in the message.
On two subsequent sessions, AS stopped at a seemingly-ordinary spam message.

So, do spam messages ever contain junk in the title data that can stop Antispam Scanner?
